Tom Coulton’s Blog

About My Good Self

Well, this is my blog I suppose and this little section is going to be about me, who I am, the things I like and the stupid things I do!

I find it hard to write about myself, I always find that when I read people’s “about me” sections I suffer from two reactions – I either choke with disgust at the size of their egos OR I choke with disgust from the knowledge that they’ve spent hours carefully wording their introduction to perfect their desired appearance as a generation X disinterested and cynical youth.

So here’s mine. It’s literally the rubbish that is pouring straight from my head (via my freezing cold fingertips) and is going straight in there without (as you will probably be able to tell) much thought or preparation! Instead of writing one of the aforementioned introductions (“I love abstract comedy and music that no-one’s heard of, I spend my time writing poetry in Esperanto whilst drinking fairtrade Espresso in the dark. Woe is me” ….. “I just *HATE* fake people like, I *LOVE* cuddly animals and I’m *THE* most popular person in my school”…. bleurgh) I just thought I’d write a list of things that I’ve done in my life! That should give you a certain amount of insight into what type of person I am plus any future blogs will no doubt highlight my politics, perspective and personality (whether intentionally or not).

So here goes…

* I’ve been to Glastonbury festival (amongst others)

* I’ve seen Brian Wilson performing Good Vibrations live

* I’ve lived in Barcelona for a year (which was the best year of my life, I’m still coming down from it)

* I’ve been to China

* I support two football clubs (Wigan Athletic and R.C.D. Espanyol de Barcelona) and have followed them through assorted highs and lows (although my current one-year supporting Espanyol has only really been highs!) such as: Wigan – relegation, almost going out of business, 1500 crowds, multiple promotions, the 1999 Auto Windscreens Trophy victory, playoff final defeat at Wembley, promotion to the Premiership, a Carling Cup Final vs Manchester United plus loads of fantastic games, goals and memories. Espanyol – UEFA Cup Final, beating F.C. Barcelona 3-1 at home, drawing 2-2 with F.C. Barcelona away (effectively stopping them from winning the league) plus a season’s worth of great games!

* I’ve had a few long term relationships, none of which have ended in a way I wanted! Maybe that’s shaped me in a way…

* I can speak English (duh), French, Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese and I can understand a fair bit of German and Dutch (spent a lot of time with Germans and Dutch last year in Barcelona) and also speak a tiny bit of Chinese! So languages are really the only thing I’m good at!

* I have two tattoos and am in the mood to get a third

* I love cats but sadly our latest cat Che died last night, so that’s not the best

* Festivals aside, my biggest all-nighter was in Barcelona – started at 3pm in the afternoon Saturday, ended up waking up on a bus a couple of miles outside the city at 2pm Sunday afternoon with blood on my t-shirt and an angry girlfriend back at the flat. Great night though!

* I’m not a big fan of Christmas, I spent last Christmas and New Year in Barcelona – curry for dinner then a Sopranos session with Christian on Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve was a night in the local bar from 8pm to 10am, complete with an attempt to eat the world’s biggest grapes as the clocks struck 12

* I love red wine

* My favourite books are as follows (in no order) : 1984, Homage to Catalonia, El Zahir, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Shining, La Sombra del Viento plus the Harry Potter books (I never claim to be original in my tastes, I just claim to make my own mind up and not follow popular tastes simply to join the crowd)

* My favourite films are: The Shining, Apocalypse Now, The Godfather (1&2), Little Miss Sunshine, Goodfellas, Waiting for Guffman, Spinal Tap, The Lion King plus others

* I’m not going to bother giving a list of my favourite bands because a) you’re probably not reading this anymore (it’s ok, I’ve bored myself too) and b) I’d go on for ages and also end up forgetting bands so I’d never have a satisfactory list (I’m kind of obsessive/compulsive about music). If you know me – you know the music I like. If you don’t know me – then I daresay I’ll mention bands in future blogs.
